Spectacular off-road route through rugged Patagonian wilderness, featuring two ferry rides, one border crossing, and a section of single-track (parts of which are unridable).
The Carretera Austral dead-ends on the north shore of Lago O'Higgins at Puerto Bahamondes (more of a dock than a port). There, snap a photo with the iconic "Fin de Carretera Austral" sign before boarding a ferry and crossing Lago O'Higgins. The ferry crossing to the southern shore (Pto. Calendario Mancilla) takes ~3 hours and tickets must be reserved in advance (more info below). An optional cruise to Glaciar O'Higgins is also available as part of the crossing.
Tips and Cautionary Tales…
Stop at BOTH border crossing stations. You will not be granted entry into Argentina/Chile without an exit stamp from the other country's border station. It's ~20 kilometers of tough riding between the two stations.
The more, the merrier. Parts of this route (the climb out of Lago O'Higgins and the single-track portion) are extremely difficult to navigate with a bicycle. Team up with other cyclists and tackle the obstacles together.
Beware of the trenches! The trench portion of this route is narrow and rough. Cyclists may choose to remove pedals to prevent damaging the crankset or getting stuck.
Ferry delays are common. In inclement weather, Lago O’Higgins can get rough: crossings are often cancelled or delayed, sometimes for multiple days. Northbound travelers should plan accordingly by packing extra food (as there are no services at Pto. Calendario Mancilla).
Ferry Information
Lago O'Higgins Ferry
It’s an 8 km bike to the docks from downtown Villa O'Higgins. Leave early to give yourself plenty of time to snap a photo with the “Fin de Carretera Austral” sign at the dock.
Crossings may be delayed due to inclement weather. Northbound travelers should plan accordingly by checking the weather forecast before leaving El Chaltén and packing extra food (there are no services on the south shore of Lago O'Higgins).

Lago Del Desierto Ferry
The staff is usually flexible with tickets and times; so long as you have a ticket, you'll be permitted entrance. This means you don’t have to stress about making your exact departure time.
Alternately, there is a trail (~11 km) that traces the east shore of Lago del Desierto, allowing you to forgo this ferry crossing. The trek is very difficult, especially with a bicycle. We do not recommend choosing the trek (but you're probably going to do it anyway).

Camping Recommendation
Lago del Desierto Punta Norte
Free camping area near the Argentina border crossing station on the north shore of Lago del Desierto. Typically, El Chaltén-bound cyclists will camp here for one night before catching a southbound morning ferry. There is plenty of grassy space (watch for mud!) and a few spots on the cusp of the forest which provides some wind protection. Clear skies will give you an awesome view of Monte Fitz Roy beyond the lake.
