Río Grande is a city in east Tierra del Fuego and the industrial capital of Argentine Patagonia. To promote settlement and economic growth in the area, Tierra del Fuego is excluded from both VAT and federal income tax. Car and electronics manufacturers have established factories here to take advantage of the tax scheme. Río Grande overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and sits at the mouth of its namesake river. Arising in the far west of the island (within Chile's Parque Karukinka), the "great river" snakes its way across the island, before emptying just southeast of the city.
Although the city won't make any Patagonia "must visit" lists, the practicality of Río Grande can't be denied: if you're seeking a spare part for your engine or a piece of equipment for your bicycle, there's a good chance you'll be able to find it here. The climate here is harsh, with cold winters, low precipitation, and strong winds.
As with many parts of Southern Patagonia, sheep-farming was main reason for the colonization of the Río Grande area. Today, the city is well-connected by Aeropuerto Internacional Hermes Quijada and Ruta 3 — Argentina's east coast highway which extends south to Ushuaia and north to Buenos Aires.
