Famous for its winter sports, summer trekking, chocolate boutiques and artesian breweries, San Carlos de Bariloche uniquely blends outdoor adventure with big-city comfort. Known simply as "Bariloche", the city sits east of the Andes mountain range, at the edge of the vast Patagonian steppe and on the southern shore of the massive Lago Nahuel Huapi. The name Bariloche is a variation on the indigenous Mapuche word vuriloche, meaning "people on the other side of the mountain." The Mapuche, primarily based west of the Andes, often ventured across the mountain range to trade and hunt larger game (specifically, guanacos and rheas).
