Lago Cochrane
Reserva Nacional Tamango is a national reserve in Aysén, Chile. Established in 1967, the reserve is home to a (relatively) large population of huemul (South Andean deer), a threatened species. The entrance to the reserve is located ~5 km northeast of Cochrane's central plaza — easily reached on foot. The reserve contains many trails and good trekking opportunities. Senderos (trails) from the Cochrane entrance head northeast to the small village of Valle Chacabuco and, beyond that, Reserva Nacional Jeinimeni and Chile Chico. The Lagunas Altas circuit is also a popular trek.
Apparently, Reserva Nacional Tamango will soon join with Valle Chacabuco and Reserva Nacional Jeinimeni to form Parque Patagonia, a large park which will stretch northeast from Cochrane to Chile Chico and cover ~2,600 km². Parque Patagonia was scheduled to open in 2015, but is not yet open to the public.
