Highlights
Lago Jeinimeni
Laguna de los Flamencos
Reserva Nacional Lago Jeinimeni is a national reserve in Aysén, Chile, in the eastern foothills of the Andes. Despite being located near the arid Patagonian steppe, the higher elevation areas in the reserve are known for frequent rainfall and snow. The reserve is apparently soon to be part of the park conglomerate, Parque Patagonia. Parque Patagonia was scheduled to open in 2015, but is not yet open to the public.
From Chile Chico, take route X-753 south, tracing the Chile/Argentina border. The reserve features interesting rock formations, including Piedra Clavada, a solitary tall rock formation resting in the middle of a wide-open grasslands. A short trekking loop (~9 km) – with good views – can be found ~25 km south of Chile Chico. Laguna Los Flamencos, home to hundreds of flamingos can be found approximately 40 km south of Chile Chico.
The road ends at Lago Jeinimeni, a stunning lake, where a trail begins. This trail stretches south to Valle Chacabuco, Reserva Nacional Tamango and Cochrane.
