Aysén

Aysén is a region in southern Chile and the country's least populated region. The region's official name is XI Región Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Aysén is traversed by Chile's most iconic highway, the Carretera Austral, which passes some of Patagonia's most spectacular landmarks, including the jagged peaks of Cerro Castillo and the massive Northern Patagonian Ice Field.

Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral is a highway in southern Chile that connects some of Aysén's most remote communities. The highway stretches from Puerto Montt (in Los Lagos) to Puerto Bahamodes (8 km south of Villa O'Higgins). Construction on the highway began in 1976 under the regime of Pinochet and was completed in 2003.

Carretera Austral also refers to the second of three "sections" of the Bicycle Patagonia Tour

Cerro Castillo

Castillo means "castle" in Spanish and the mountain's jagged cliff walls resemble such a fortress. Formed by the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed to the atmosphere, the mountain was first ascended in 1966 by a party of Chilean university students.

Lago General Carrera

Chile's largest lake; named after José Miguel Carrera (1785 - 1821), a Chilean general and one of the founding fathers of Chile; home to the marble caves of Capillas de Marmol. Settlements on the lake's shore include Puerto Río Tranuilo, Puerto Ibáñez and Chile Chico. A ferry service connects the south shore of the Lake, Chile Chico, and Puerto Ibáñez (on the the north side of the lake). In December 2015, The North Face co-founder Douglas Tompkins died from hypothermia after his kayak capsized in this lake.

Río Baker

Chile's largest river by water volume. The river begins out of Lago Bertrand's southern end, near the small village of Puerto Bertrand, and flows along the eastern frontier of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. Fueled by the glacier, the river absorbs the glacial runoff of Río Nef (at the Confluencia) before eventually emptying into the Pacific Ocean near Caleta Tortel. Many maps (including Google Maps) erroneously label the river as "Río Cochrane".

Northern Patagonian Ice Field

Smaller of two remnants of the Patagonian Ice Sheet, which once covered all of Chilean Patagonia (circa the last ice age). Known locally as El Campo de Hielo Norte, the ice field is home to Glaciar Exploradores, Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael and Glacier San Rafael.
