Enjoy decreased vehicle traffic as the route moves from dry terrain into dense fjordal rainforest and gradually circumnavigates the massive Northern Patagonian Ice Field.
Vehicle traffic on this section of the iconic highway is almost non-existent as the road dead-ends at the Carretera Austral's southern terminus, just south of Villa O'Higgins. Exit Cochrane from the southwest part of town and rejoin the Carretera Austral, ascending to Lago Esmeralda before briefly tracing Río del Salto, a tributary of Río Baker (Chile's most voluminous river). Where the road meets Río del Salto, there is a grassy riverbank area to the south: an ideal spot for a break or a picnic.
Route Option:The small fishing village of Caleta Tortel, a community built on stilts and connected by a network of wooden boardwalks and stairways, is located ~23 km west of the Carretera Austral. We highly recommend visiting Tortel; however, some travelers will opt to skip the detour and continue south on the Carretera Austral, directly to Villa O'Higgins. |

Camping Recommendation
Río Barrancos Bridge Wild Camp
There is a great tent-camping area at the bottom of the massive descent into Río Barrancoso gorge featuring easy river access and plenty of trees for wind and rain protection. Río del los Ñadis is nearby and the massive peak, Cordon los Nadis, towers overhead. The clearing is not far from the road, but relatively hidden from view and protected from road noise (which is infrequent on this stretch of route).
